Group 3: Spirituality Naturalized

FQ: What component of Catholicism does Flannagan believe Buddhism fully embodies?
The Golden Rule. Pg. 186

FQ: Which does Flannagan believe comes first, an ethical conception or a theology?
An ethical conception. Pg. 204

DQ: Flannagan discovered Buddhism at a crucial point in his life: college. It arrived to him at a time, universally identified in the west, of exploration, growth, and existential crisis. However, this time is also associated with "liberal" culture, youthful rebellion, and vulnerability. Do you believe that someone, and everyone one is different, but generally speaking, has the proper constitution at such a confusing time in their life, to make the grand decisions on belief, meaning, and faith?

DQ: Flannagan believes that a sort of normative ethics precedes any abstraction such as a moral system, or a religion. Such a view echoes Sartre's idea of existence before essence. Do you agree that existence precedes meaning, or do you believe that meaning precedes existence?

See you all in class!

FQ) what are two common functions of religion?

    A) Providing stories that make sense of things and provide meaning & providing some sort of "superglue" to an ethical conception.

DQ) Where do you find meaning or more meaning nature or scientific reasons?

  2. FQ
Although you can't assert that your creation myth is true, you can assert that, what is true?

    A) That the belief in the truth of the myth benefits certain folk.

Something I'm curious about is where is the line between debate and trash talk for atheists and theists. With something so important to their lives it makes sense for theists to get offended. So how do we go about respecting the person but not the belief. Especially when it's a belief we don't want to see perpetuated?

    Also, this...
