Existentialism and the Big Boulder

I've always found existentialism to be a bit perplexing, so I've been studying up on the great minds of Sartre and Camus. For The Myth of Sisyphus (Camus) we'll discuss accepting your plight in the face of adversity. For Existentialism is a Humanism (Sartre) we'll consider how his arguments for the optimistic side of existentialism hold up.

The above video is a nice synopsis of the tale of Sisyphus, a clever trickster who cheats death on more than one occasion, and makes the gods very mad. With his story in mind, it will be fun to see whether his punishment is all it's cracked up to be.

Some key points in my presentation:

  • existence versus essence
  • (human) meaning and (divine) purpose
  • absurdity
  • optimism/pessimism
  • quietism versus action
  • the problem of evil/tornadoes

We'll also learn which of these two philosophers was a ladies man, and which one was 5 foot 3.

  1. That was a really nice video and great comparison between the punishment for sisyphus and humans dealing with everyday struggles. It often does feel repetitive and meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

  4. I'm looking forward to your presentation, and learning more about optimism from an existential perspective! The video was great.
