Group 2 Presentations

Group 2 Presentations: General Themes of Atheism

Kyle Bunton: Highlights from the movie “Religulous”
I’m going to talk about 2 of the best points from the movie “Religulous” like: Science and Scripture not being related at all and how the story of Jesus is exactly the same as others around the Mediterranean…just inform the class about how I feel.

Lauren Mandrell: showing a video
I’m going to show a video. I found something I think will be enjoyed in class.

Shelby Toosi: Existential Nihilism
I’m going to be talking about existential nihilism and its major points. I’m going to be talking about both Alex Rosenberg and Friedrich Nietzsche. I will be concluding with an argument of nihilism vs. humanism.

Christopher Michael Weaver: Common misconceptions about athiests
I’m going to cover "common misconceptions about atheists" and alternative sources of morality/ethics (i.e. not the bible).

  1. It was great hearing so many informed and articulate voices from among some of our less voluble members today! I hope we'll continue to hear from you all, from here on out!!

  2. P.S. The Tyson-Dawkins exchange I referenced today is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_2xGIwQfik

Adam remembered correctly, Dawkins does say Fuck Off at the end... but not to Tyson, who in any event would certainly agree that "science is interesting." Dawkins also says he accepts Tyson's "rebuke" that an educator must meet his audience where he finds it, but perhaps that last line does subvert the concession a bit. Still, I stand by my statement in class that Dawkins' vaunted verbal aggression is usually overstated.

    1. P.P.S. If that exchange was too brief, here's a much longer unmoderated conversation between Dawkins and Tyson on "the poetry of science": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGBm5Ywjd5o
