What a wonderful post from Rabbi Rami. I too am fed up with the "interfaith" dialogue, which is basically a few moments to dial down the hate within and direct it towards non-believers.
ReplyDeleteJust as we saw in A&P, no amount of reason is applicable to ideas and beliefs about a transcendent being, i.e., beyond space, time, understanding, etc. Ridicule is the only defense against ridiculous claims. Again, Thomas Jefferson--the shining diamond of wisdom:
“Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is the mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus.”
God (he said only somewhat ironically), it just seems to be that kind of week really. I had to unfriend someone on Facebook earlier today and leave a group, because... in response to being shown an article about woman-led and gay-friendly mosques popping up in the world, the leader of the Facebook group (someone I have met several times in RL) said something to the effect of "These mosques should be burned to the ground. I'm not advising vigilante justice or for anyone to take matters into their own hands, but that's what should be in our hearts. We should feel angry that such places exist and take joy when they're destroyed."
